From January 2015 until December 2015, SAAHAS and Tetra Pak were able to mobilize the waste picker community in Bengaluru to collect and segregate over 2000 tons of used beverage cartons. Through a variety of street plays and audio campaigns, the waste picker community was able to understand the importance of waste segregation and recycling. The collected beverage cartons were sent to Deluxe Recycling, and an impact study on the recycling program was conducted in assocation with IIM-B.

Tetra Pak and Waste Ventures India came together to reduce the burden of used beverage cartons in Hyderabad. In this project, they aimed at reducing the number of cartons that went to landfills and were able to successfully recover and segregate 112 metric tons of UBCs in the city, which were then sent to Deluxe Recycling in Mumbai. Tetra Pak provided financial incentives to the value chain by ensuring that the informal sector gets sustained livelihoods, benefitting over 1500 waste pickers in Hyderabad. Ultimately, they were able to provide end-to-end solutions throughout the value chain.

Bal Vikas Dhara, a reputed NGO in Delhi, joined hands with Tetra Pak to help members of the waste picker community achieve dignity, security, and equity through organized and sustainable efforts. This was done through 10 workshops where 950 waste pickers were directly impacted and 5500 were indirectly impacted, as well as 6 health camps help with almost 3000 waste pickers and their families, where they received medical benefits.

Under the guidance and funding of Tetra Pak, Sampurn(e)arth Environment Solutions and Deluxe Recycling entered into an association to increase awareness amongst waste pickers in the Mumbai metropolitan area. They were able to sort and segregate used beverage cartons, which were then recycled and converted into end use recycled products. In total, over 160 tons of waste were removed from landfills and turned into usable and affordable products.
The Action Alliance for Recycling Beverage Cartons (AARC) is an association that brings together the entire value chain to ensure that our future is more sustainable. From industry leaders to NGOs to individual waste pickers, AARC aims to impact them positively, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.
